About Walter Reed Society
The Society’s vision is to serve as a strong voluntary organization which actively supports Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, its people and its legacy.
Who We Are
The Walter Reed Society (WRS) is a tax exempt 501(c) 3 charitable organization incorporated in the District of Columbia and registered in the State of Maryland. Originally organized in 1996 for the benefit of Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), the Society now serves its successor organization, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), and its educational, patient care and research activities.
Membership in the Society is open to all – officer, enlisted, active duty, Reserve, National Guard, retired, civilian, patient, family member, and friend of WRNMMC. The WRS governing board is all-volunteer, and all of those involved in assisting our wounded, ill or injured do so without remuneration.
Through the generous support of donors, the WRS assist servicemen and women being treated at WRNMMC and other DoD medical facilities in the National Capitol Region. The WRS helps them with unexpected financial needs and provides them with specially identified equipment and services related to their care when other resources are not available. Grants are reviewed and approved on a case by case basis. Since its inception, hundreds of service members and/or their families have received assistance from the WRS. The WRS also supports the staff at these medical facilities by providing resources for morale and welfare activities; all request for such support by current employees are reviewed by the WRS as well as by the facility command to ensure all legal requirements are met.
In the past few years the WRS has expanded its support to include other non-profits
assisting military families in the National Capital Region. These grants are fully
reviewed and if appropriate approved by the the Board of Directors.
