The Walter Reed Society, Inc. was founded in 1996, for charitable and educational purposes for the benefit of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and its educational, treatment and research activities, as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in the District of Columbia (TIN 52-1961196) and registered as a corporation in the State of Maryland.
The Society’s vision is to serve as a strong voluntary organization - comprising individuals affiliated with the original Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) and its successor organization, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) - which actively supports the institution, its people and its legacy.
The purpose of The Walter Reed Society, Inc. is to:
-
Support activities and fund projects and programs to benefit service members and staff at WRNMMC, particularly if associated with education, treatment, or research. Similar projects/programs at other military health care facilities in the Defense Health Agency National Capital Region Military Health System may be supported as deemed appropriate by the Society's Board of Directors.
-
Provide good stewardship of the funds donated and grants awarded to assist service members and/or their family members, which are intended to provide them with help with unexpected financial needs and to provide them with specially identified equipment and services related to patient care at WRNMMC or aftercare when other resources are not available.
-
Collaborate with other non-profit organizations operating within and supporting the WRNMMC patient population and related populations at military treatment facilities in the National Capital Region in assisting service members or their families as deemed appropriate by the Society's Board of Directors. Collaborate with the Walter Reed Foundation in similar endeavors as approved by the Society's Board of Directors.
-
Seek to preserve the legacy of Major Walter Reed, the military physician and the institution named in his honor by involving and communicating with the membership and friends of WRAMC/WRNMMC through educational activities, the newsletter, the website, and the expanded utilization of social media platforms.
Membership in the Society is open to all military and civilian personnel who have associations with WRAMC/WRNMMC to include patients, staff, those who attended any course of instruction at these institutions, providers of goods and services, friends and neighbors.
